Behind Stangeland Gard lies a history that is as rich as it is fascinating. The place has deep roots that stretch back to the 16th century, when the farm was a royal estate. Over time, the farm was owned by a wealthy Dutch family, who also owned another trading island in Austevoll. In the 1830s, the farm was one of six farms, and Stangeland Gard was ranked number three in the row. The main house was built by Rasmus Stangeland in 1912 and later added to in 1938, when the family landed a large haul of herring of great value. Over the years, the farm has been used for various purposes. In 2010, it underwent an extensive transformation, when Oddvar Stangeland completely renovated the farm. He practically rebuilt the farm from scratch. During Oddvar's reign, the farm was used for unloading goods, and the farm also functioned as a guesthouse in the form of accommodation and rental of party rooms. The Njåstad family, the current owners, took over the operation in 2023 and want to create a sanctuary and a meeting place, where both visitors and locals can become part of island life. Their commitment to preserving the place and the surrounding nature is evident in everything they do. The family, four siblings with spouses and children, continue the legacy of their father, a fishing boat owner. Although the father passed away in 2023, the mother is busy with various chores, and she has put her own special mark on the farm. Our story is not just about the land and buildings, but about the people behind it - people with a vision to create something meaningful, and as a positive contribution to all who visit and participate in life on the farm. Being generous, committed and loving the place are core values that make this farm unique and inspiring. Stolmen, the island where the farm is located, is a pearl of contrasts. Farthest west in the sea, the outermost of 667 islands, islets and skerries in Austevoll, Stolmen is a place where the seagulls speak English, and the air tastes of the sea. The name "Stolmen" has been said to come from the word "stålmenn", which reflects the rugged climate and environment of the island. The local community is warm and proud of their island, and its history makes the island a rich and historic place. Welcome to Stangeland Gard on Stolmen - a place you don't just live, but experience.
