Garnet is a red supergiant star in the Milky Way, in the constellation Cepheus, 5200 light years from the Sun. It owes its nickname Garnet star to its dazzling red color, first noticed by William Herschel.
It is one of the largest visible stars, with a diameter of 1260 solar diameters: if it replaced the Sun, it would extend to halfway the orbits of Jupiter and Saturn.
