Unique Summer Stays in Scandinavia 2027

Experience the magic of Scandinavian summer with unique stays in nature: treehouses, glass cabins, lakeside glamping and cabins with sauna.

Unique Summer Stays in Scandinavia 2027
In this article

A unique summer stay is a night in nature where the place itself is part of the experience: a treehouse above a Norwegian fjord, a glass cabin under the light Nordic sky, a glamping tent by a Swedish lake or a floating cabin on a Danish fjord. Below we cover the best types of summer stays in Denmark, Norway and Sweden, and when to book them.

Our best tip: book early. Scandinavians plan their summer holidays months ahead, and the most popular stays in July are often gone by spring.

Why Scandinavia in summer?

Scandinavian summer is short, bright and intense. In June the sun barely sets, and in the far north of Norway and Sweden it does not set at all. Locals spend these weeks outdoors: swimming before breakfast, eating dinner by the water and staying up around the campfire because it never gets properly dark. A unique stay puts you right in the middle of that rhythm, with the highlight of the day waiting just outside the door.

Treehouse stay in summer

Sleep among the treetops

Norway and Sweden are home to some of Europe's most spectacular treehouses, from cabins hanging over the fjords to hideaways deep in the forests of Värmland. Denmark has charming treetop stays too, often just an hour from Copenhagen. In summer you wake up to birdsong and watch the sunset linger for hours from your terrace. Boathouse on the water in summer

Stays by the fjord, lake and sea

Summer in Scandinavia is all about water. Stay in a cabin on the Norwegian fjords with a kayak by the door, a glamping tent by a forest lake in Sweden or a floating boathouse on Denmark's Limfjord where you can jump straight into the sea. Many stays also have a sauna or wood-fired hot tub, and there are few better things than a sauna followed by a cold dip on a bright summer evening. Glass cabin under the summer sky

Glass cabins and domes under the midnight sun

In a glass cabin, dome or birdbox, nature comes right up to the edge of your bed. In June and July you can watch the bright night sky shift between pink and blue, and north of the Arctic Circle you can experience the midnight sun from under the duvet. In August the nights grow darker again and the stars come back.

Denmark, Norway or Sweden?

Denmark: short distances, white sand beaches and island hopping. Easy to combine with a few days in Copenhagen, and the water is warmest in late July and August.

Norway: fjords, mountains and the midnight sun. Summer is peak hiking season, from Jotunheimen to the Lofoten Islands. Read our guide to hiking in Norway for routes.

Sweden: archipelagos, endless forests and Midsummer, the biggest celebration of the Swedish year, with flower crowns and dancing around the maypole in late June.

Tips for your Scandinavian summer

Book early. Scandinavian school holidays run from mid or late June to mid August, and July is peak season everywhere. June and August are quieter, often just as beautiful and easier to book.

Pack for every kind of weather. Summer days can be warm, but evenings by the water are cool and mountain weather changes fast. Bring layers, a rain jacket and insect repellent.

Respect the right to roam. In Norway and Sweden you can walk freely in nature, but keep your distance from homes, take your rubbish with you and follow local fire bans.

Plan for distances. Ferries and winding roads take time, especially in Norway. Two to three nights in each place gives a better rhythm than moving every day.

Have a great summer. Warm regards from Magnus 👋
