Our night in a portaledge on a Norwegian cliff face

Sleeping in a tent hanging from a sheer cliff face in Norway had long been at the top of my bucket list, and the experience did not disappoint in the slightest.

We met at a parking lot and said hello to two guides and the rest of the group we would share the experience with. Together we walked a short trail before putting on the climbing gear. After a thorough safety briefing, we climbed the via ferrata route to reach our tent, fixed to the rock face with a view over the Norwegian mountains.

Here we enjoyed the silence, a homemade dinner and a trip to the top of the mountain, where we brushed our teeth as the sun set, before crawling back into our hanging bedroom.

I had expected a night full of butterflies in my stomach, but instead I was rocked to sleep by the mountain wind and slept surprisingly well. The next morning we were spoiled with coffee and breakfast served right in the tent, before rounding off the experience with one more via ferrata route.

Where we stayed

Our unique stay in a portaledge

Even though the experience looks both wild and daring, it felt surprisingly safe. You need no experience with via ferrata or climbing to take part. The guides gave a thorough safety briefing, and with professional equipment and calm guides by our side, we felt in safe hands the whole way.

As the icing on the cake, a delicious homemade dinner was served on the mountainside, and the next morning we woke to hot coffee and breakfast, which we could enjoy with the finest view.

What I loved most

Adrenaline and calm at once

An experience that combines adrenaline and calm in the best possible way. Your pulse rises during the climb, but settles again once you hang on the cliff face and take in the view over Hemsedal's magnificent nature.

A little more about the area

Arrive in Hemsedal in good time. Before the adventure begins, you can head to one of the area's beautiful waterfalls and enjoy a quiet lunch in nature.

Set aside extra time the day after. In the morning you have the chance to try one of the area's other via ferrata routes.

Most of all, just remember to breathe. Both when your pulse rises on the way up the trail, and when you reach the top and take a deep breath to let the magnificent view sink all the way in.

Tips from Leonora

Three things I'd tell a friend

Pack smart
Pack smart
Flexible clothing, good shoes and room for climbing gear in your backpack on the way up. Bring your own tableware, a bowl, cutlery and a cup, to avoid disposables.
Bring a warm sleeping bag
Bring a warm sleeping bag
Nights on the mountain can get chilly, and a good sleeping bag makes a big difference for a comfortable night's sleep.
Don't worry about the toilet
Don't worry about the toilet
It took up surprisingly much space in our minds before the trip, but it turned out to be no problem at all. If you need the toilet, you can climb either up or down, and in an emergency an empty bottle is a good backup.
